Prized Pics from the Past

July20

The Birmingham Central Library is hosting Jim Baggett, author of the newly released Historic Photos of Birmingham, today. Baggett, who is the Library’s Chief Archivist, will start siging at 4:30 p.m. in the Central Library’s Boardroom. I also read he’ll lead a discussion and presentation of some of the photos he features.

Should be good!

J.J. at Jake’s

July14

Joshilyn Jackson is signing her new book Between, Georgia today at 4pm at The Alabama Booksmith. Jake, owner of the Booksmith and southern-lit guru, claims that Between is even better than her first book God’s in Alabama.

But that’s what all good booksellers say, isn’t it?

Eat, Read and Be Merry…

June29

is the name of the Literacy Council’s annual fundraiser (co-sponsored by The Alabama Booksmith). This year it’s being held at (local) in the Vestavia Hills City Center shopping center on July 30th.

This year’s guest is Jill Conner Browne (The Sweet Potato Queen). Everyone who goes gets to visit with her and goes home with signed books. The wines and eats will be pulled from the pages of her books. There will also be an auction of gift packages from around the ‘ham.

The pre-reception starts at 5:30pm and the actual event starts at 7:00pm. It’ll set you back a $150 tax-deductable donation to attend both or a $100 gift to attend just the event.

I’m a pepper. She’s a pepper. Wouldn’t you like…

Everyone is blogging nowadays…

The Birmingham Public Library system is publishing a blog. It’s been up and running since May 2006. Besides program news, etc. they keep it an up-to-date list of the latest books and dvd’s they acquire.

Could be cool if they start posting interviews with the authors and artists that put in appearances/shows.

Column commute…

May1

Susan Swagler has moved on. After nine years of writing weekly columns for the Birmingham News, she has now signed on with Portico magazine. On her blog, Swagler says she’ll continue the local book scene conversation in June, when her first article runs.
For the past two weeks the News has filled her void with column-inches of “book related” tid-bits. Most of which Swagler has already covered in prvious columns. Let’s hope the News finds a suitable replacement!
