Recap GeekFest 2012

This past Friday night the Hoover Library hosted their first ever GeekFest. . . and it was fantastic! The library shut down at 6 p.m. and two hours later opened their doors to a crowd of folks. The fun began right from the start as Storm Troopers patrolled the crowd (something about looking for Droids).

These types of events need to do well in three areas – costumes, games for the kids and food. The Hoover Library and their volunteer force nailed all three. The costumes were great:

Spiderman

Web-slingers

We have many many more photos. . .

Batman

The Dark Knight was there that night.

Batman 2

Learning how to beat the Joker.

Gandolf

Gandolf the Grey

Ghostbusters

Ghost busting equipment check.

Ghostbusters trap

The props and gear were amazingly detailed.

Jedi

Ignore the Mario mustache – he’s a Jedi in training.

Princess

Posing with the Princess.

Jango Fett

There’s a bounty on the Bryants.

sand people

Waiting in line for a Bantha.

Super Hero

Keeping the bad guys back.

Storm Troopers

Which way to the Cantina?

Darth Vader

Hard to get a good picture of this guy – he was always standing on the dark side.

But all of the costumes and cosplay folks were just the beginning. There were plenty of games, crafts, prizes and activities for the kids as well:

wizards

Conjuring up some crafts over in the Shire.

slap bracelets

Making Wonder Woman bullet proof slap bracelets.

Angry Birds

Analog Avians – real-world Angry Birds.

pac man

Look carefully – that blur is carrying a Pac-Man shield and that ghost is trying to get him.

slimer

Slinging Ghostbusting bouncers at Slimer.

lightsaber duel

They hooked up the main theater screen to an Xbox Connect so the kids could have larger-than-life light saber battles.

yoda

Fold with the Force in the Yoda Origami room.

mario

One hallway was hopping as kids jumped around Mario style.

All of the free food and drinks were just as impressive as the costumes and games. We didn’t get as many pictures of those, because, well, er, um. . . we were eating:

yoda soda

You could get a glass of Yoda Soda down in the Star Wars cantina.

droid

It was a private club.

cake

They were serving big pieces of Bilbo Baggin’s birthday cake in the Shire with Ginger Ale and Root Beer to drink.

After all of that, the kids got to hang out in the Lego Construction Center for a bit before we headed home. There was a ton of stuff crammed into our almost-two hour visit and we still didn’t get to do it all (the line for the Harry Potter section was long).

I have no idea how the organizers will judge the night or what they were looking for, but we can’t see how it could be anything but a huge success. Let’s hope they do it again next year.

  • Wow! What an evening. I know it will be a while before C&I forget any of it. So glad you were able to get there. Love the photos.

  • How fun!! So was it very crowded? I wish we’d known about it! …not that Ali would have known who any of those characters were. But Chris would have been impressed!

  • @Rachel – It was fun! There was not much of a crowd this year. Everyone got to do whatever they wanted a couple of times. There was just so much to do. I could see where next year’s event having a bigger draw after this one. -tb
