Smaller Than Small

January30

This is just too amazing not to share. This guy creates super-small microscopic statues out of sugar crystals and dust particles. Some of his work can only be done between heartbeats and it all fits on the heads of needles and pins.

That’s Snow White and all seven dwarves inside the needle’s eye and the witch up top. Amazing! If it hadn’t been on Snopes I might have cried for a “PhotoShop foul”!

Pint-size Pals

January29

micon.jpgThe new (well, one-year old) baby Crowe came to see C at work last week and compare notes on how all us new parents are doing. Plus, I think C was just excited to have someone his size to play with.

Above the Fold

January25

B’s dad was featured in the Birmingham News yesterday. It was a neat article about him as the new pastor of Bluff Park Baptist Church and the “shot in the arm” has taken to help revitalize the church. B’s folks moved to the ‘ham last year after serving at a church outside of Dothan and now live over in Bluff Park.

We’ll post the picture from the paper as soon as we get a copy.

Snacks By The Stacks

January12

The Central Birmingham Library starts percolating on Monday. Today they announced their partnership with Safari Cup in opening a cafe in the library’s atrium. Right now, they are set to serve between 9am and 4pm, Monday through Friday.

They already provide free wi-fi and this sounds like a cool idea too, as long as the noise is kept in check.

Tonight

January12

Print artist Charles Buchanan’s latest work will debut tonight at Naked Art. He’ll be at the gallery 5pm-9pm and then again tomorrow 1pm-6pm.

We’ve been keeping up with Charles over on his blog, and can’t wait to see what he brings to the show.

You’ll also be able catch him on HGTV’s “That’s Clever” the season.

Guess I Don’t Eat Enough Grits…

January10

or haven’t lived in the South long enough… or maybe I’m just your average Air Force brat. Turns out, I have no accent. I’m “Midland”. Sounds blah. I’ll have to try again next year. Y’all let us know how y’all sound.

What American accent do you have?

Your Result: The Midland

“You have a Midland accent” is just another way of saying “you don’t have an accent.” You probably are from the Midland (Pennsylvania, southern Ohio, southern Indiana, southern Illinois, and Missouri) but then for all we know you could be from Florida or Charleston or one of those big southern cities like Atlanta or Dallas. You have a good voice for TV and radio.

Big news…

January8

…that doesn’t mean a thing! Belk has announced that they’ll be moving an office to Birmingham. I’m not exactly sure how the press release reads, but basically what they are doing is moving their “Western” division office (which oversees their “western” stores) from Greenville, SC to Birmingham. Their corporate office with all of the buying functions will still be located in Charlotte & us Parisian folk will still be out of a job by the end of March. I think this is a sincere attempt to try to make nice with the city, but if they turn all of the Parisian stores into what Belk at the Galleria looks like, bringing 20 jobs to the city isn’t going to save them in this market. They have the potential to do good things… and I’m not just saying that because they’re now signing my paychecks… or am I??!!

Got It Covered

January5

This month, the Birmingham Library’s Central Branch has the coolest book exhibit. It features the book arts program over at the Univeristy of Alabama. We’ll take our camera when we go.

The library’s blog has the full scoop.

Getting Cranked Up

January5

cork.jpgI know the posts have been few and far between, but we’re settled and starting to get back in our groove.Hope you had a fun New Year’s Eve! We made our annual pilgrimage to Montgomery for the gathering. We’ve been gathering ever since we left school. This year everyone brought their chirrens. So it was a whole different kind of party. But lots of fun, just the same. We’re already looking forward to next year!

Happy New Year to you and yours!

Back in Town…

January4

and ready to slow down…

Our annual whirlwind holiday tour of central Alabama took us to Tallassee for Christmas Eve, back to Birmingham for Christmas Day and then down to Columbia, to wrap things up (or unwrap them, I guess).

It was a great Christmas and it was good to see everyone. Wish we all got together more often. We hope yours was good too.
