Voices in My Head

August15

The JCLC now offers audio book downloads! All files download as MP3’s that you can put on your player or burn to cd (though there seems to be no Mac or iPod love). The Hoover Library has offered this for a while, but you had to live in Hoover to be allowed to use it.

I’m glad the JCLC is looking out for those of us rocking and rocking and rocking at night, trying to get a little boy to lie down. With a pair of headphones, I don’t mind sitting there for the gazillion hours it takes for him to decide he’s sleepy.

On the Job

August15

Not 45 minutes into his first full day at work and he’s already sleeping at his desk.

Here’s a shot of Cullen and B enjoying some Boppy-time last night:

Food For Thought

August14

I’ve always wondered why the masses are ok with fictional story lines like the Left Behind” series but upset with “The DaVinci Code”. They both base their stories on Bible stories, but then make up buckets of stuff to fill in the blanks and make a more entertaining read. It’s what authors do.

I always assumed (or maybe hoped) that people knew that all these books are just fiction. But Jim Evans and others are warning that folks may not be that smart.

Test Run…

August10

B had a dentist appointment today so Cullen spent half the afternoon at work with me. We did pretty well, for just coming out of the gate. My co-worker, Martha, was even kind enough to sit with him so I could make my conference call. Everybody needs co-workers like we have here. I think once Cullen gets use to the new surroundings and my co-workers’ voices (and they to his) we’ll be doing just fine. The crying was minimal. Though he’d only sleep when B was here, but that will change. He starts coming to work with me full-time next week.

He did enjoy checking out the new jazzy seat. The music with this one is soooooo much better than your standard baby-tune charts….

The corner of my office is now Bryant Base Camp One. Here’s a shot of our newest employee taking a nap…
And Cullen admiring a new ceiling…

One Big Booksale…

August9

Friends of Homewood Library are having a huge used booksale (pdf) next weekend. They say 8,000 books are on hand and have never been in the store before. Word on the street is that prices will start at a quarter.

Festivities start Friday night, August 18th. The doors are also open Saturday, Sunday and Monday.

Hatch Show Heaven

August7

The Hatch Show Print shop has been on my “To Visit” list for years. You can trace 150 years of Southern music, politics and printing just by studying the posters and billcards hanging on the walls, of this legendary Nashville shop. They have done some amazing posters in the past. And their “preservation through production” philosophy is a neat strategy that’s paying off in spades.

The guy over at Be A Design group got to spend a whole week there running type and spinning old-world presses. Lots of cool pics and video. Too cool not to link to. He promises more Hatch related posts to follow.

Which weighs the most?

August4

Thirteen point six pounds of steel, 13.6 pounds of feathers or 13.6 pounds of Cullen?

Cullen was having a good day yesterday. That is until about 3 p.m., when the happiest little boy in the world went for his ‘two month check-up’. There he visited with his nice doctor and a nurse who he liked only up until the point she started jabbing him with shot, after shot, after shot, after shot.
Four shots and two band-aids later he was not a happy camper and that’s an understatement. I wasn’t there. But to hear B tell it, her heart broke with each poke (and ensuing scream). Poor guy’s sore legs kept him fussy all night.

Cullen weighed in at 13.6 pounds, stretched to a comfortable 24.25 inches long and scored some sweet bandages.

Evans’ Latest Article

August2

We miss Jim Evans’ column at the Birmingham Post (for that matter, we miss the Post too). Whether you find yourself agreeing or arguing with Jim Evans, he talks about things that everyone should be talking about. His short columns allow many of us to have important conversations that we normally wouldn’t get to have.

What I thought was going to be a book review is actually more of a book report, but timely and chock full of thought provoking stuff nonetheless.

Here’s the link.

Shake, Rattle and Drool

August1

These robo-risers don’t just provide you with more storage, they move and rock the crib to any one of four programmable rhythms.

The Lullabub Cot Rocker consists of four modules that are placed underneath the crib’s legs. It then rocks the crib, which mom and dad control via remote control. The Lullabub can simulate the motion of a mother’s womb, mother’s heartbeat, drive in a car or boat on water.

It’s sold-out. But the manufacturer promises more next month, retailing for $230.

Thanks for the link Steve, but this just seems weird.
