Prized Pics from the Past

July20

The Birmingham Central Library is hosting Jim Baggett, author of the newly released Historic Photos of Birmingham, today. Baggett, who is the Library’s Chief Archivist, will start siging at 4:30 p.m. in the Central Library’s Boardroom. I also read he’ll lead a discussion and presentation of some of the photos he features.

Should be good!

Journalism 101

July18

The first words out of Dr. Padgett’s mouth, during my first day in the university’s tv station…

“When you’re around tv news equipment, act like the cameras and mics are always on.”

I guess it can happen to anybody though…

A little more to the left, please.

July15

Our son is becoming quite polite. I always place a burp-cloth over my shoulder during his post-feeding-burp-inducing backslapping. Cullen has deduced that I must not want spit-up on my shirt right there. So kindly, he bends every which way he can to make sure he doesn’t spew anywhere on my shoulder. Between his two feedings this morning, he managed to target and hit my other shoulder, my stomach and both arms, with not one drop on the burp-cloth. See, isn’t he thoughtful?

But all that is behind us now… this morning I got my smile. B has seen him smile. My mom and her friend have seen him grin. And this morning I got the mouth wide open full gum salute. It was the most perfect 10 seconds you can have at 6 a.m.

Below is a picture I snapped of B and C at the Birmingham Botanical Gardens. She was introducing him to grass (the lawn kind) and he wasn’t too fond of it. He curled his toes so fast we were picking blades of grass out from between them.

J.J. at Jake’s

July14

Joshilyn Jackson is signing her new book Between, Georgia today at 4pm at The Alabama Booksmith. Jake, owner of the Booksmith and southern-lit guru, claims that Between is even better than her first book God’s in Alabama.

But that’s what all good booksellers say, isn’t it?

Bye-Bye Brittany’s

July13

It’s sad, but true. Brittany’s restaurant (home of tasty Texas Toothpicks and launching pad for Homecoming weekends) in Troy has closed it’s doors. B and I both cashed many a paycheck from there while in college, as did many of our friends.

In fact, it was the place that B and I met. I’ll never forget that first day. She walked up to me, in her Brittany’s shorts and green t-shirt, and said “Here are some more dishes. Table three needs cleaning, too.” Ahhhhhh, love at first sight. Isn’t it every busboy’s dream to date the waitress?

I sent an email today.

July10

Yeah, you’d think big deal, right? Even with my limited “online” time, you’d think emailing T at work would not be worthy of a blog. But get this, the subject was “Poop.” Yep, poop. Not only was I so excited that Cullen pooped today, I was excited enough to spend my precious time during his afternoon nap to email my husband to let him know. This maternity leave thing is really exciting. I guess it does beat those “after inventory” orders, huh?

My how time flies!

July6

It’s been a month. A full month! I can’t believe Cullen has been here that long. The doc declared him healthy at yesterday’s appointment. Cullen tips the scales at 10 lbs. 11.5 oz. and stretches out to a comfortable 22.5 inches long.

Cullen likes bright lights and ceiling fans. He now sleeps, in his crib, in the nursery. He sleeps fine but Mom and Dad are up and down throughout the night “making sure”. But we’re beginning to settle in. Cullen also doesn’t like the car-seat for more than 30 minutes or so. Hopefully he’ll get used to it.

As I type this Cullen is just now falling asleep, so I’m off to bed myself. Our new family motto… sleep when he sleeps, for when he’s awake, no one sleeps!
